Hello, One of my favorite coins is this 1919 S Penny. The smooth outer layer feels like nothing I've ever felt. Not satiny,not waxy, just incredibly hard solid finish but flawless and buttery smooth feel. Any opinions or experience out there to help with this mystery? So many of you have been so informative and really know your stuff! I realize more and more how much I think I'm learning, then I ask, and boy do I not! Thank you to all who have taken the time to let me ride your coat tails and learn!

I see damage on the mintmark and an almost slick surface on the reverse. I wonder if there is some wax, grease, or something on that surface to make it feel buttery.

Have you soaked it in acetone yet?

The old timers before 1970 use to shellack their cents to protect them. But this doesn't look like it's been shellacked. Looks like it's just circulated for years.

I would try acetone soak to a day to see if it comes off. If not maybe it is wax, try placing it in the sun for a few hours to see if it soften and drops off.

3388bknb,
Are you adding a black out around the coin with something like paint program? If so, it is distracting.

Yes, the photos appear to have a 'mask' to eliminate the background. Would be fun to give the coin a long soak in 100% acetone.

Well thank you for all this advise and input! This is a different one from the one advised to be put in acetone ,but I think I will soak both at same time. The weight will be added in the next hour. Definitely a worn coin .just no clue about that amazing feel. It was in an envelope in a safe for many many years. But neat for sure.

Yes, it is a circle mask - to mask the fact that he is holding it in his hands and getting more fingerprints on it..

No seein how the coin weighs normal, and is to terribly worn, I would say that, yes, there is something on it adding weight.

I will not use the circle filter in future .sorry it is bothersome. Actually a she holding the coin but in palm of hand, but I guess that's bad also& 🤷 #8205;#9792;#65039;
