Why is there some pennys that the surface of them is black like I have a 1925 Wheat penny that's black as well as a 1975 penny that's also black. Is this anything special or...?

*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

Copper will tone out to many different colors. from red to brown to dark brown, to green even - under certain environments.

Probably over-exposure to the elements like heat, water, soil, etc. All of that can turn copper black over time.

Thx for adding pictures. The dark discoloration could be from environmental or chemical exposure as mentioned above.

It is wear on rim that will flatten it. Just like the letters, date and other items on the coin. That is one of the main ways of determining the condition of coins.

Wide, deep rims are quite common on the 1972 Lincoln Cent: https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin...2-1c-rd/2953
