Yea. I thought it was just trash. But the third photo. Bottom of the bridge leg... doesn't look like displaced metal.

Given the images posted, I'm thinking a good dose of post-strike damage of a well-circulated nature.

Greetings, besides the high quantity of impact marks PMD, the best I can make out from your photos is a VLDS , it tends to give this appearance on harder metals like nickel .
I'm not at my computer right now so I can't give you a link to read up on the example of this VLDS "Very Late Die State" on the harder metals of coins .
Let's wait for the Experts to chime in on this.

Well this coin was struck by a worn die, but it also has taken lots of circulation hits, the one on the bridge up-right could be a well placed hit as well.
