Hi all!!

Hope all is well! I recently acquired a 1794 8 reales coin, Mexico mint, with the initials F F. As the assayer. Apparently the only assayer for that year was F.M, so I'm highly skeptical about its authenticity, but the coin looks remarkably accurate, passes the "ring" test, and weighs 27.4g approx. Is this a possible assayer combination? Or a 1960's copy?

Thanks!! Wags

It looks pretty good except for the assayer's initials.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Looking at Monedas Españolas by Cayon and Castan, the obverse type (bust and numerals) appears correct for 1794. The only "FF" listed for the Mexico City mint, for an 8 R piece of Charles IV, is 1805, with an astronomically higher value than "TH", which is listed also for that year, as it is for all years from 1803 to 1808 (in fact 1810).

Unfortunately the catalogue doesn't go into any detail about the mint officials. I assume that the compilers would have checked on the validity of the "FF". If not for that high valuation, I'd like to think it was a bogus die used on contemporary counterfeits. The latter seems more likely than a one-year type which somehow got muled with an obverse die from ten years previously.

Hi there!

Thanks for the replies. I think Ill take it to the LCS where they have a precious metals verifier. If it comes in as +/- 90% silver, I may gamble the $30 or so and send it to the grading company?

A known modern numismatic fake - one that needs to at least be first-glance highly suspicious (ignoring the incorrect assayer). This particular assayer FF reverse die they use here is found paired with other obverse dates - 1780, 1778, 1777, and yes, the infamous "1776 FF" that sadly found its way into Krause.

There are a zillion prior threads on here (in the main World forum, not this separate "World Coin Grading" one) dating back to ca. 2010 where swamperbob has led the discussion and analysis of such pieces.
