I picked this up recently from SARC and thought that I would share my learnings with this community. I'm pretty sure that a coin of this style has not yet been posted on CCF.

It is a 9th Century Drachm from the Turkic tribe Ghuzz (AKA "Gozz" and "Oguz", depending on which language you are speaking). This term likely translates best into English as "tribal federation" . This somewhat loose confederation of tribes reached across much of Central Asia and was centered on the region of Chorasmia on the Syr-Darya River. This River flows from modern-day in Kyrgyzstan through Uzbekistan and southern Kazakhstan to the Aral Sea. I believe that the Ghuzz existed from about the 6th through the 9th centuries, although seemingly with a variety of roughly two dozen, sometimes-squabbling tribes. More info can be found here:

https://www.iranicaonline.org/articles/gozz

This particular Drachm (zeno.ru #314071) is an interesting mule of Album A-99 on the obverse and a variation of Album A100.1 on the reverse. It was minted in the time range of 844 to 860 AD and references Abd Allah b. Tahir. It is 22 mm in diameter and weighs 1.20 g.

I'm still learning about this part of the world and would welcome any corrections, additions, or similar coins posted to this thread. Thx.

Here's the relevant Wikipedia entry:

One on the Oghuz more broadly:

And one on the Tahirids:

I've been obsessing on early Turkic history of late and have been watching these appear at auction. Pretty cool!

Yes those are great sources of info @kushan—thx for adding them to this thread. I've only recently come to appreciate the difference between Turkic and Turkish. So much to learn!

Very nice!

I used to own (but sold 2 years back) an example of the predecessor of this coin type, the Afrighid king Sawashfan

An-Interesting-Drachm-From-The-Ghuzz-Of-Syr-Darya

Very interesting late example - I believe that this coinage series is arguably the last-ever with direct roots in Hellenistic coinage, beginning as an imitation loosely based on the tetradrachms of Eukratides I:

Thx @jbuck. @finn, that is a great addition to this thread, even though it is no longer in your collection. Had you previously posted it on CCF? If so, I'd like to post a link to it here so that it is easy to find. Thx.

Never mind. I found it here:
