I belong to several Facebook groups. Some are excellent with top notch field experts, some filled with keyboard warriors that are self proclaimed experts. (Sooooo frustrating) So some posts an old Wheat cent with verdigris and some other staining. When I got there the responses were about 20 deep with cleaning suggestions. Here is what was recommended..... Baking soda, vinegar, CLR, lime, calcium, Ketchup, Toilet bowl cleaner, Zaxby's sauce (Honest, guy said he was doing it for years), toothpicks, pencils, and a pencil eraser. Then last night a guy posts a glue coin, 5 people tell him it's a vise job, two people tell him it's a die clash. Then I post that its glue. Then 15 people agree with me (some know it but some see my "Group Expert" badge and hold on), but the poster insists on getting it graded because "a buddy" told him it was an error. I even explained it clearly. I said the entire area is raised on the coin, the lettering is backwards, and all of it is transparent. Won't soak it in acetone, getting it graded.

Never argue with a fool. They beat you down to their level and kill you with experience. You tried.

Quote: Never argue with a fool. They beat you down to their level and kill you with experience. @sil has this as their CCF profile tagline! It is frustrating when people ask for validation of their misconceptions rather than an honest appraisal.

No one recommended using mayo? Tell the guy to send it in and let you know what it comes back as. John1

These tools, used with a slurry of salt and vinegar, will definitely remove staining from any coin. By the way, bobby, I've never been on bookface and never will.

Here's a new one today..... Ready for this.... It's a 1944 Steel cent, that someone copper plated and spent and now the copper is wearing off the rim. Worth a fortune. How many times have we seen this here....

Thanks for sharing... My favorite comment to post: Shhh.. don't tell them.. the more antique coins they ruin by cleaning them, the more valuable mine become (or just leave out the antique when discussing moderns)
