I'm going to go through my collection and trying to figure out what it is worth because some of the coins I want to let go. I started with my Walking Liberty half dollars. I have 28 coins; most are 64's and probably the most valuable coin is 29-D at a 58 or a 1937 at a 66. At any rate, according to NGC. the coins value at $3450 and according to PCGS, the collection values at $4567. ( All my coins are in NGC holders). I went on to ebay and picked the lowest price 'buy now' coin in my grade in either an NGC or PCGS holder and get a value of 4330 for the set. How do I settle on a fair value with a dealer if I want to sell all 28 coins ? As an aside, is a PCGS graded coin really worth 30% (on average) more than an NGC graded coin ? Thanks for suggestions |

When selling a collection you have to consider the market. For example some coins will sell at the dealer really quickly and you will closer to retail for those. Others will sit for a long time and you won't get much for those, no matter the value. Your dealer will most likely use Grey Sheet to get you a value. Using Ebay/NGC and PCGS pricing isn't a great way to value a collection UNLESS you are selling it yourself. Based on my experiences the most likely price you will get if you sell yourself is based on ebay sold. I don't look at ebay prices as they are negotiable. Between NGC and PCGS, PCGS prices tend to be slightly more accurate. As to whether an NGC or PCGS case adds more or less to a coin, its all market driven. I've seen examples of NGC coins selling below market and the same with PCGS. I recently saw a beautiful proof IHC in an Anacs slab sell for much more than a comparable NGC/PCGS. You have to look at each coin individually. But to answer your question, you need to get greysheet to find out what a dealer will pay. |

1) You can't use PCGS prices for NGC graded coins. 2) If you sell them on ebay, expect to pay around 20% in fees and expenses (and don't forget additional possible income taxes). 3) A dealer has to pay you as little as they can so that they can turn around and sell them for a profit. It's for + grades.
MS64 or MS64+ would be the 2 different prices.

My local coin store was really busy yesterday. Oddly, folks were buying and not selling, considering the market prices went up yesterday. However, I did notice a larger quantity of Walking Libs that they don't normally have quite so many.

NGC is much slower to update their price guide in this rising rate environment.

If you needed cash right away selling the entire lot, you will definitely not going to get the best value.
