Is this time worth protecting or just keep it aside just for memories of what money used to look like for the grand kids?
The value as mentioned already is based on the silver content and for that reason is worth setting aside but does not require special protecting if its just going to be silver value. Its possible silver value can go up and so value will further increase if it does over time. Coins in especially great condition such as found in untouched mint sets can have additional value you can look up on places like graders web sites
https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/united-states/ or here
http://m.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices.htm Errors or varieties also as mentioned can add further value but those require some time to start getting familiar with those that are worth looking for, and then need to invest time to search coins for them. They tend not to come across often so its not a get rich quick type of thing but people can indeed find some if looking regularly. One book that has a decent amount of them for a beginner to learn is called Strike it rich with pocket change
https://www.amazon.com/Strike-Rich-.../0593328604/ I would not buy the book however if you do not have interest in looking through coins over time for them.
Heres a quick list of some silver coins also which is easy to spot (hint, coinstar machines reject silver so check local reject bins)
