Whilst noodling $1 coins I found this rather shiny 1996 Parkes $1:

What's-Up-With-This-1996-$1-Coin?
What's-Up-With-This-1996-$1-Coin?

I'm a bit concerned that the lustre is artificial as I can see some scratches on the surface of the coin . . . Should I keep it or throw it back into circulation?

It doesn't, but it would allow us all to help answer your question, since we'd have a better view of the coin. So, since you're the one in need of assistance, how about you drop the attitude and post better pictures?

Okay then, I didn't mean for the attitude, I apologize.

OK, now tell us what you see that prompts your question "What's Up?"

Well, I can see scratches on the surfaces of the coin that make me feel like this coin has been cleaned. I'm not sure whether to put this in my collection or to throw it back into circulation.

Well, it's a little scuffed, but otherwise appears normal to me. It seems likely that it was sitting around in a jar for some time before re-entering circulation, as a $1 coin from 1996 after 30-odd years of continuous circulation would be rather dull and worn.

Whenever you find an "unusually shiny" $1 or $2 coin, it's always worth checking to see if it's an "impaired proof" - a coin busted out of a proof set and spent. In this case, the pattern of "frosting" does not match the frosting seen on proof Parkes dollars, so that possibility can be ruled out.

Perhaps this coin was in someone's piggy bank or was part of a collection. The photos are so bad that I can't tell if the coin has been cleaned.

Agree, original mint lustre with scuffing on the high points and a touch on the wide field. What caused the scuffing?
