HI All! I'm a newbie coin hunter who likes to collect cool looking errors and damaged coins. I recently found this coin that I call "One Ugly Nickel" and was wondering if anyone could tell me how it got this way. Clearly this poor nickel has been traumatized while in circulation, but is it possible it was abused during the minting process as well? How can you tell the difference between damage caused from a bad minting process and damage from circulation? Your thoughts on the cause of all the marks on this coin would be appreciated! Thank you!

*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

To CCF! Looks like it was in a parking lot. Probably been ran over multiple times. We call it a parking lot coin. It's been damaged, after it left the U.S Mint. If you want to know more about the differences of actual errors and damage, check out error-ref.com.

@cud, first welcome to CCF. Second, no mint errors here, that is all damage.

to the CCF and One thing to remember is that if there is a cut, gouge, or scratch on a coin with a buildup of metal beside it, 99% of the time it's damage.

to the CCF!

As noted, this is Post Mint Damage or PMD. Anything that happened outside of the mint would be impossible to pin down the cause. Each anomaly is incuse and the metal is displaced to the outside of the hit, making a small raised wall or wave of metal around the area. That's how we can tell it's damage and not a mint error.

This is an image of a Jefferson nickel with multiple areas of strike through. Some type of debris was between the die and the planchet when the coin was struck. The difference here is that the incuse areas on the coin do not show any displaced metal around them.
