We need to see a full image of both sides of the coin so we can see if it has any zinc characteristics. Also, check your scale. Make sure it's not out of adjustment.

It is the small date. It has a Denver mint mark (if it's real.) The only thing we can't verify from an image is the metal, but a copper planchet should weigh 3.11 grams.

Everything sounds correct to be the rare coin!

Interesting!

It would be very cool if you have the small date copper 1982 D but odds are not in your favor. If you have no way to calibrate your scale, use a cent you know is copper (81 or older) and one you know is a copper plated zinc (83 and newer), see what your scale reads for each. From the small example we have to work with though, it looks like a copper plated zinc cent, there are areas that would appear to have plating issues.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are more out there, but, I have to say, I see zinc blisters.

It is a small day and if it's copper 3.11 is what it should weigh... But it's zinc I see zinc blisters
