A good weight scale, magnet, maybe a ping test, a local store that has a XRF analyzer that can go deep. Maybe you could buy them on condition if they test bad you'll get your money back.

Hondo Boguss, that is a cool site about Engelhard bars. I have a 100 oz one from about 1986 my dad gave me.

You're welcome, kennedy. Livingwater, they have a page for 100 oz in case you hadn't found it.

XRF doesn't go deep, unfortunately.
A well established bullion dealer can X Ray, ultrasound or magnetic resonance test. A bullion dealer may have a standing contract with a competent materials testing laboratory; as a customer, you may have to wait a few days for the result.
Basic magnet test can sometimes provide cheap but fast supporting test info.

Thx for helping me learn something today @hondo. I hadn't known about that website before.

Spence, I didn't know about it myself before kennedy inspired me to look. I figured that if they had serial numbers, there must be a registry. Englehard also has a page about counterfeits, but I did not explore it.
