*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

Yes just damage—a sharp knife seems like a reasonable guess.

Some people like scratching coins. Years ago I came across six rolls of cents--each coin in the rolls had an 'X-ed out' reverse.

Believe it or not, there are roll hunters out there that deliberately scratch the coins on the ends of their re-rolled coins that they return to the bank, as a marker to tell themselves and other roll hunters "this roll's been gone through". Of course, once the roll is busted open and the coin re-enters circulation, the markings lose their meaning, and it simply becomes a "damaged coin".
