This Nickel has been in a box since 1998. Can anyone educate me on why the coloring is like this? It has never had any chemicals/cleaners applied to it. It has a weight of 5 grams. Should I send this one to be graded?

To CCF! It's Environmental Damage. PSD. Definitely not worth the time or money to get it graded, as it's just damaged and worth face value.

@nsh, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @e&v that this coin had some sort of environment or chemical exposure (obviously before it cam into your hands) and is just worth face value.

NShuler,

I agree with environmental staining of some kind.

Nickel can tone out in strange ways depending on the environment it was kept in and what was touching it during storage. Another coin in the box may have affected this coin while in that box.

It is recommended to keep coins in a dry cool area if it had a cold or moist environment then it would cause coloration.
