I'm going through my father-in-law's collection and found this 1964 with what appears to be a mangled S and a deformed U in the word TRUST. I've attached an image showing this. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

@aipt, first welcome to CCF. Second, is it possible that this is just mechanical damage which has moved some of the metal around on those letters?

@spence, thank you for the welcome -- and the response. I have a bunch of new coins and think this forum will be super helpful.

I doubt this is damage after minting because it's stored in a plastic case. it has a blue card that says in memorial but I have no idea if this was a third @spence, thank you. I have a bunch of new coins and think this forum will be super helpful.

Also this was originally my father in law's father so there's a good possibility it was purchased when it was first issued.

Here's a picture of the coin in the case.

I'm thinking post-strike damage (after striking). The half in question was placed in the plastic case by a third party re-seller--not the mint. I've seen this packaging a few times over the years. The coins typically are in pretty decent condition, but not 'high' mint state.

that case is not one the mint used or would use. this is an aftermarket production. so, I agree with the others and say that the U is damaged.

to the CCF and Not gov package. Even if it was, coins receive all kinds of marks after they are minted. They are dropped into bins ran through counters, and a lot more. This is called Post Strike Damage.
