I'm nee to the error coins collecting , my son and I found this 1978 penny and are wondering if it is an error. If so what kind.

*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

To CCF! Just a heavily beat up, damaged coin. PMD. No errors. It's a spender.

to the CCF

It's simply a damaged coin - spend it.

@tash, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that all of that smeared metal is just due to mechanical damage. This cent may have spent some time in a parking lot being run over by cars.

Tashies7,

I agree with PMD not a mint error.

Yes, agree with all above. The coin didn't leave the striking chamber in that condition.

to the CCF One of the first things to learn is that when you have a coin that has cuts, gouges, or scratches on it along with a corresponding buildup of metal, 99.99% of the time it's just damage. Second thing is not every little thing you see on a coin is an error. There a millions of ways damage can occur compared to the way an error occurs. This site is a very good place to learn the difference.
