I know that a decision to sell a coin is a personal thing but I need some opinions on some points before I decide. I found a 1999 Wide AM LMC about 2 weeks ago and ,thanks to all of you have concluded it would grade out to about AU 50. Here is my dilemma, the only price I can find anywhere is for AU 58 at $125. After talking to several coin dealers, none of them would even make an offer without having it graded. It looks like till it is all said and done grading would cost me around $50 so if the coin value drops significantly from AU 58 to AU 50 what kind of profit do you suspect I could realize? Also, are chances good that, even at this grade a coin like this will appreciate over time or decrease as more are found(IF a significant number more are found)? I would appreciate any and all thoughts and/or opinions.
Rest in Peace

The quick and cheap-to-you solution would be to offer to sell it at a bargain price, say $75. Your profit would be a huge percentage, it wouldn't be burning a hole in your ... well, flip, maybe, and you could use the money that you turned over to buy more coins. Plus your purchaser would be happy with the bargain, whether or not he decided to have it graded.

On the other hand, if you're looking to squeeze every penny out of it, get it graded and be satisfied if you realize a smaller personal profit if the grading doesn't go as you wanted it to.

Personally, I'd go with Door #1: quick profit, quick sale, take the money and run.

ANACS had a special on Lincoln Cent coins but I dont know if it was just wheats or LMC's, and if the $10 special covered varities like this. It might be worth looking into though.

I would not grade it, it's probably not worth the cost IMO. If you're simply in it for the money, sell it...and I agree $75 is reasonable. Since you found the coin, how can you lose? If you pay to have it graded, you'll have to sit on it for a LONG time before it will appreciate and you're taking a chance that not thousands more will be found, reducing the value.

I would personally have it graded by pcgs and hold on to it for a while imo I think the value will go up over time you dont want to live to regret selling it so soon especially now with whats going on with the 4 new 2009 cents and who knows if the cents will end after 2009 imo ether way it was a facinating find

Thanks for all of the input folks. I think I am going to hold onto it and enjoy it for a while. I collected baseball cards with my son for many years and in that business ,if you found something of value you better unload it quickly because whatever new thing came out became much more desirable and values plummeted! I don't think that is quite so true in coins but with these"rare varieties" I don't know how you can project how many there may be out there. I am not really interested in taking the money and running, I am just a little concerned with the marginal grade and how quickly it could lose what value it has. I also collect gemstones and kind of overspent at a show last week and to appease the wife I thought I might sell the coin to recoup some of the household funds!

Thanks for this thread hockingzig, I also have a 1999 WAM, not as in good condition of yours, but I was thinking the same exact things.
