Keep your eye on the Sacagawea 2009 Denver golden dollar. So far only 700,000 minted, compared with more than 7 million Philly (Sorce: US Mint web site). I'm not sure what's behind this huge skew.
Also keep in mind that these are only preliminary numbers, and they can suddenly make millions in one month, like they did last year. All year it looked like the 2008 SAC was going to be a key date, and then they minted >95% in the month of December last year.
Speculate at your own risk... Edited by mycrob 05/14/2009 11:15 am

Maybe they missed typing a Zero "0" when updating the count for Denver ?

No way... only 700k? Did they already finish minting 09 Sacs and are moving on to Presidents?

I don't know if they are done minting the SAC for the year. They could do the same thing again this year that happened last year- making only a small number of SAC the first 11 months and then come back and mint a pile in December.
Who knows how they do things? It's a mystery to me...

Remember, the reported calendar year 2008 mintages of Sac. Dollars took huge upward jumps in December 2008, due to 2009-dated Native American dollars being minted in December 2008, in business-strike quantities. In 2007, the mintage for the NIFC Sacagaweas was 3.92 Million in Denver and 3.64 Million in Philly. The 2008-dated NIFC Sac's were almost certainly minted in similar quantities (ie: less than 4 million at each Mint). Subtracting an estimated 4 million NIFC 2008-dated Sac's from each Mint's calendar year 2008 production figures would mean that about 11 Million 2009-dated Native American business strikes were produced at the Denver Mint in December 2008, and about 6 Million 2009-dated Native American business strikes were produced at the Philadelphia Mint in December 2008. If production of the Native American dollars stopped by the end of February 2009, this would give combined total figures (Dec. 2008 to Feb. 2009) of about 12 Million for the Denver Mint and 13 Million for the Philadelphia Mint. Even those quantities are simply dwarfed by the mintages for Presidential dollars. If they strictly adhere to the mandate that "20% of the Dollar Coins be N.A. Dollars", they will have to make more of them before the year is out! The Harrison Dollar was also produced before the release date of Feb. 19th. I know this because I received two of those Dollars from circulation on Sunday, Feb. 15th! Hopefully, the Mint will release specific figures for the mintages of 2008-dated NIFC and 2009-dated business strike N.A. coins, not just the calendar year mintages.

The mint sold out the 2009 Sac's for the direct ship program today. This one may be the one to watch.

Quote: I don't know if they are done minting the SAC for the year. Doubtful. Remember by law the mintage of the Sacs must equal one fifth of the entire mintage of dollar coins. How would you know how many that would be if they haven't struck three of the four president dollars yet. I would expect that close to the end of the year when they have a pretty good idea what the total coinage of presidents is they crank up the Sacs again to bring the mintage into compliance. They have "sold out" items in the direct ship program and then released more several times. I would not count them as really sold out until 2010.

I would have a hard time believing that they would "sell out" of the '09 Sac's or the Pres. Dollars at any time at any year. A freakishly surprising low mintage for something during a bad economy, has happened before, but I think we would know beforehand what the mintage numbers were going to be though, with some "pre-release" information if that were going to happen. BUT, primarily the thing to also consider.......this is the first time in years that the '09 Sac. is going to be circulated.....so that would tell me, since it's NOT NIFC this year, the mintage numbers should almost be GUARANTEED to be much higher than recent years.

As of today (Mar. 26th), 28,226 of the 2009-D Native American dollar 25-coin Mint Rolls have been reported sold, so that's 705,650 individual coins sold so far right there, and that's counting only the coins in premium-priced Mint Rolls!
