I was wondering how can these error coins get out of the mint? I'm talking about major errors.

I mean I know more than millions of coins are minted every year and it may not be possible to check each and every one. But still, coins with half of it missing, wrong planchetts, "mules" get to the hands of the collector

I never came accross such a coin here, never even heard of such a discussion. All the errors here are, die-related minor stuff.

How is it posiible that so many big errors are seen in US coinage

It's possible because of lapses of quality control, machine malfunction, and a general lack of perfection on the part of the mints. Tens of millions (or more) coins struck daily at blinding rates make a lot of room for errors making it into the tubs and bags that go to the banks. No big surprise.

That's what I thought, and seemed normal for the older mintages, but I saw a 2006 Nevada quarter 1/3rd missing. I think it's interesting that with this technology they still miss some coins.

But that makes error collectors happy right

The reason errors were more common farther back is because coins used to be dropped straight into canvas bags at the mint and sewn shut...meaning they didn't have to go through a counting machine to be rolled. The public could buy these relatively low face value bags and bust the stitches looking for error goodies. A bag of cents, for instance, was $50 face value.

Now the mint dumps all the coins into tubs that are so large they have to be moved with a forklift. They go directly to the Fed Reserve banks where they are rolled for further distribution. The days of the old canvas bags and the public seeing quantities of coins that have never been seen since leaving the mint are over. A tub of cents, I believe, is $4000 face. Not sure I know anyone willing to go to the bank and pay a surcharge to order a $4000 tub of cents from the Fed Reserve.

Where can you get some of these canvas bags? How much do they usually run? As you can probably tell I am just starting to collect coins and error coins

You cant get them any longer because the mint doesn't do it that way anymore, that is what he was saying. they used to do it that way but stopped awhile back

Last I heard the mint was selling off all extra canvas bags to collectors but don't know if they are all gone now or not? Have seen them sell on ebay for $8 to $10 each. I know I have two or three around here somewhere but I would have to do some digging to find them.

400000 pennies to be 4000.00 face, and that would take some deep pockets to carry around
