Put in a lowball bid on this and got it. Sellers's pictures of obverse were not good - reverse were better. Hardly any bids. Obvious verdigris spot on obverse and a small bit of rim damage at K1 on reverse. Thoughts and grading?

I'd say MS-62BN, although it might look more like AU-58 in hand. That verdigris should improve with VerdiCare, but it may leave behind a dull spot or residual corrosion.

Trying to decide if I should hit it with acetone first. Verdicare for sure, but I don't want to damage the luster. Beautiful coin in hand (except for the spot) - cartwheels nicely. $16.

No downside with acetone, but highly unlikely it will do anything.

You're probably right. I have heard that acetone can remove any residual moisture from the verdigris and make Verdicare work better, but my results with Verdicare have varied from amazing improvement to absolutely no change, regardless of an acetone bath first. I'll probably hit this one with Verdicare later today. Will report.

Looks AU to me but you also have that small patch of damage netting out AU details.

I usually roll a Q-tip doused with acetone on the verdigris let it dry and roll it again (five or six times). It only takes a few seconds between rolling the Q-tip. Then I put a drop of Verdi-Care on the affected area and work the debris lose by gently poking with a green cactus needle (no rubbing). I roll acetone again to pick up the loose debris and then treat with a light coat of Vedi-Care to finish it off. After applying the light coat of Verdi-care I use a lint free cloth to remove excess. No rubbing, just put the coin in the cloth and apply pressure to both sides of the coin at the same time. I used this method a lot and it works. Here is a coin I did a few years back that had verdigris on 90% of the coin. It ended up grading PCGS MS62BN. http://goccf.com/t/265585

No question that a Verdi-care treatment is in order. Please keep us up to date on your progress.

Good info. Hmmm, where can I find a cactus in Atlanta. It's in a Verdicare soak now.

Don't recall if it was here on this site or somewhere else that someone mentioned using porcupine needles that they bought off ebay for a few bucks that they used for poking at verdigris.

And nice looking coin!

So far the Verdicare seems to be doing nothing.

It's likely not going to do anything without slowly and carefully working it over with a cactus needle/porcupine quill, or something else of the sort. Others use rose thorns. Because it's convenient, I use the thorns from my lime tree.

based on how much verdigris is there I'm betting that if you do get some or all of it off that it has already damaged the coin.

i hope not as the coin looks like it could be low MS. I'm at MS61 but I think the damage is done already so I'm adding the details designation.

Yeah that spot looks like the hard crusty type. Acetone my soften it up a bit. MS62RB if that spot comes off.
