My father passed away awhile back. I cleaned his room and found a tin Full of Wheat pennies, a couple Buffalo nickels, 50 cent pieces. The pennies are all from the 30-60's, some with D and some with nothing. I looked on ebay to see if they had any value. I'm confused, some of the coins with no mint mark are going for crazy money, while the same penny is going for way less? Is this Shill bidding possibly or can some be worth real money? Thank You

some wheats are worth more than others, it would be worth your time to look over a Wheat cent value guidebook & familiarize yourself with some of the various dates & mints, there are many that stand out as being 'rarer' than most, especially the much older coins. ebay can be a helpful guide, but it's not the gospel. whether or not you have scarcer dates/mints is part of the fun of discovery. enjoy searching thru that stash. color me slightly jealous. I love sifting through piles of coins.

yes, some can be quite valuable.

just my Two Cents.

by the way:

no mintmark = philadelphia
D = denver
S = san francisco

to the Forum, Finsdad! It seems that you would benefit from the purchase of a Red Book.

Welcome!

For some reason, there's a thing going on with " no mint mark". Coins minted in Philadelphia traditionally didn't have a mint mark. Probably because for a long time, Philadelphia was the only place coins were minted. Eventually the Denver mint, the San Francisco mint and others came to be and they started putting mint marks on coins. But " no mint mark" is actually probably the most common scenario.

Where you see crazy prices for these, it is because they are looking at prices for very high grade coins. The typical coin in collections are much lower grade than these; in fact, even coins that look uncirculated will not rise to this level.

If you have coins from the 30s to the 60s, the 1931-S penny will be the only coin with value over a few dollars. Most coins will be worth a few cents each unless they are in uncirculated red condition.

It's still a nice collection and something worth going through and keeping.

with Mr.Pink above (and the others too) Please take some time to look at them, pick the best looking or the very odd looking ones and post them up here (only one coin per topic, if you please) and we can possibly get you moving in the right direction.
