I have received a large collection of asian / Chinese coins. I unfortunately have no knowledge of the coins. They were purchased from an estate in which the collector had owned a coin shop in the 1980's & 1990's. They had said he sold the majority of his collection before his passing. I will be posting quite a few more Chinese coins.

This coin was in a envelope marked "Republic Y-317"

I was wondering about the authenticity of this coin as well as date / variety info & approx value. Majority of coins have been in brown paper envelopes for who knows how long.

I was able to test that the coin was 90% silver on my sigma metalytics machine. Diameter of the coin is 23mm.

My first impression is negative.
I have a collection of fakes so I'll take a look and follow up with a better answer. edited:
My fake does share some tiny details I see in both coins and mine is attracted to a magnet.
The piece should be close to 23.5 mm by 1.25 mm and weigh 5.2 grams.
My coin is a little too big, too thick and doesn't weigh enough.
Even though the hair seems odd, my photo notes say mine is a good likeness of a legitimate coin.

Appreciate the info, may I ask what the correct diameter & thickness is? I unfortunately dont currently have access to a scale. This coin is non-magnetic and seems to be silver & tests ok on a sigma, but I dont have a shop with an xrf within a hundred miles.
EDIT - I see the dimensons you mentioned & I had rounded down. Diameter with calipers is 23.39mm & thickness is approx 1.54mm.

Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Very accurate measures and SG calculations can be key factors for authenticity.
I have too many fakes that can be look-a-likes to the real deal.
I may be the worse person on this forum to pass judgement just based in pictures.
SG can be very useful and can easily be done at home.
I have high cost top end gear for the most critical cases but also am comfortable with results using items costing a small fraction of the lab gear.
Perhaps with some error, but likely well enough to tell good from bad in nearly all cases.

I purchased the platinum membership for 8 of the coins and then regular goldshield for the additional 6. With registered mail costs I think it totaled out somewhere around $650 for the grading costs.
