Ahhh, the bittersweet taste of collecting Ancients. Life...ofttimes intrudes. A family issue has arisen and I am compelled to part with a handful of pieces from my collection. A few are actually quite recent acquisitions. *sigh* It is good that I understand the temporary aspects of holding these beauties. So...tomorrow I am putting four coins up for auction on ebay. A Hadrian, a Claudius, and my two Augusta. Kinda stings! Hopefully that will be the extent of it. We shall see. Anyone got a sell-off story to relate? Misery loves company! The few rounds of sell-offs I had were related more to shifts in my collecting focus, and wanting to reinvest in new acquisitions.
Best wishes with the family situation, and with the sale of the coins. I hope all goes well.

Thanks, Bob. I've had a a few sell-offs over the past decades. The first was, as you mentioned, a shift in collecting focus. The last couple, however, were direct hits on my Ancients. I live in New England here in the US, and during a particuarly rough Winter I had to choose between the collection and home-heat. Home and family take precedent.

Circus, I too have been in that situation. A mistake that I made was selling a few high dollar coins instead of a greater number of lesser valued ones. Yes, it's a bit more work but I regret parting with the ones that I let go.

Excellent advice, Hondo. It is true. Being careful and thoughtfully selective is a smart course of action when faced with such a dilemma...if the situation allows. In this case, I am grateful that the situation doesn't have me backed into a corner.
Having to part with high-value coins is rough. They are, of course, more difficult to replace.

Sorry to hear this, Mike. I have been through a similar situation in the past.
It is indeed painful to part with cherished coins, and I hope that the family situation can be resolved without too much pain.

Yeah, I hear you, Jim. It does sting a bit. My focus is sssso tight: fine realistic portraits. It's quite difficult to find these inspiring pieces. I does hurt to let them go...but I understand they are only in my hands for a time. Hopefully they will go to stewards who will care for them as I did.

Quote: Anyone got a sell-off story to relate? Misery loves company! I decided to buy a house about 20 some-odd years ago and was rounding up cash to finish the deal. Was down to needing "several" k$ more and ended up pulling out an album of tough National Bank notes I had been hanging onto for umpteen years and decided to walk 'em thru a major coin show. It didn't take too long and I had the $ in hand and made some other folks very happy in the process. I was also able to keep a few notes that were, and still are, special to me! I still have the album and have been adding back to it the last few years. I sold the notes into a hot market and they served me well. Good memories and no regrets at all. I have had many occasions where life has meant I have had to part with many of my ancients. The first few were all relating to job losses, which meant that paying bills and keeping food on the table became a priority. I did have a collection of half decent Ancient Greek coins, which were parted with during one such period. I really do share your pain.

I can relate to your pain too. I have just recently let go of almost all my ancients. In fact yesterday I listed not only my last few but also the coins I have found over the past years metal detecting. The bright side for me is that I am in a position to plough the money back into buying more ancients but this time with a theme. Hope all goes well for you with your family.

Must be all the more painful to let go of coins that you yourself rescued from the ground. Quote: I really do share your pain. I do not collect with an eye towards any kind of profit-making. So that makes things easier. Finding new stewards, while meeting a life-necessity. That's the bottom line.

Fortunately, at least up to this point, my sell-offs have been changes in collecting focus, as others have mentioned. However, even those situations were somewhat difficult for me because of the time and effort I'd spent putting the collections together. None were easy decisions to make. Best of luck on the auctions, and I wish you all the best, circusmax120.

I recently considered selling many of my coins, but didn't really need any extra money at the time, so I decided not to sell anything in ...just in case I would regret loosing those coins later. If I had family financial necessities, I would have sold half of my collection right away and not regretted it a bit. I hope your family go well! Hope your coin auctions go well also!
