I've been quite interested with these 1896 penny souvenirs that where made out of a shipment of coins that crashed into a guys pond a in 1897

There was a display of these countermarked pieces at the RCNA in Halifax. Very interesting read. The train carrying the shipment of new 1896 cents failed to make the curve and derailed at Palmer's Pond. The boxes of cents (80 cases, 6+ tons) crashed out of the car and spilled around the tracks and pond. Locals picked some up and brought them to jewelers who engraved them like that shown in the OP. The display at the RCNA had 6 or 8 different.

That coin is one of the far 6 varieties. I wonder how many of the ones that fell in the pond were from that die?
