I am just now gathering a modern cash collection, so coins like this are a real treat. So many are worn out and crummy.

Not my area of expertise, but they look like nice examples!

Very fine coin, CopperHunter! And I imagine that there is far less risk of counterfeits with copper coins than silver from China.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Very nice - looks good from here but I know absolutely nothing about these coins.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

Quote: there is far less risk of counterfeits with copper coins than silver from China. That is true, however there has been a new type of counterfeit using genuine pieces. I might do a post, mainly these fakes are targeting high end mule and pattern pieces. I should warn there are now very good quality good low grade fakes as well.

If real, it's a nice coin. Bought this high grade fake before, from a dealer no less.

Quote: Bought this high grade fake before, from a dealer no less. This one is a good example of these new fakes. For beginners, the easiest way to tell them from genuineness is the overall fatness of the dragon. Another detail to point out is that the Chinese and English characters are too rounded. Here is an image I found online of a genuine PCGS 65 coin. The sad news is that these fakes are destroying new interest in copper cash coins. There seem to be no effort to stop them. In the future fewer and fewer collector will find interest in a field filled with nothing but fakes.

I'm not sure if westerners have a full knowledge, understanding and appreciation for counterfeit Chinese coppers. Not sure if they think they are all scams or junk. Not sure if they know where certain counterfeits have a legitimate place in a collection?

There are definitely a decent amount of recent numismatic fake 10 cash and other Chinese coppers in the market...
To that end, not studying it all that closely, the patina of the OP's coin sets off some alarm bells. I'm out of practice with these, though, so I'll leave it at that.

Quote: Not sure if they know where certain counterfeits have a legitimate place in a collection? That is a great question, and I think it goes beyond just Chinese coins. I see the problem of fakes is that they are deliberately deceiving buyers. On the other hand, a replica is where the buyer is aware it is not a genuine piece. Moonlight mint products are a great example, they are marketed as replicas and collectors pay a premium for that. There is nothing wrong for budget constraint collectors to have a chance to enjoy "million" dollar coins. However when these coins are used to scam an unknown buyer thinking they are genuine is where it crosses the line.

I think most collectors do not distinguish between a fake, replica or contemporary counterfeit, unless a contemporary counterfeit is well-documented in a book and recognised by PCGS/NGC.
Anything else is just muddying the waters in this hobby.
