Milking sounds right I was thinking of some kind of calcium buildup. It looks like you could clean it quite easily if it were anything else. I got another set with it a 1962 proof set similar type of holder just lower quality. Either way thanks for the help the links and info are helpful I'm having a hard time finding proper resources. I'm just starting to collect proof sets so they throw me off a little. Individual coins are easier to place

If you want to clean this I recommend the restoration natural way; Quote: Boiling Water Bath - The silver object or pieces are placed into an aluminum pot and covered with water. One tablespoon of salt and baking soda is added and boiled for three minutes. After cooling, the silver is placed into a warm soapy water mixture and cleaned with a cotton cloth and then dried with a separate cotton cloth.[16] The soapy water mixture it is baby boric soap and distillated water at 50%. the no 16 you see it is the scientific study for this method, and come from my Chemistry Manual of Silver Artifacts Restoration. (I took from Database which has references to studies) Hope help you and others. Many methods are but ask specific solute or equipment. Hope to see the difference. PS: when you boil put the coin in a cotton tissue and suspend, not bottom of recipient. It is very important this. Some use first Boric 35% solute to boil and go very well.

Food for thought, To clean no problem if needed. Might try to take conservation steps first, it may save it from a cleaned detailed grade. BadThad lists a few pointers below. http://goccf.com/t/57008#447106Thanks, Doug.

@ Doug: That post was for Verdi's. I do not like acetone on this, but on subject: Here we have silver not cooper. Other world other ballgame. Or you call him because I say the best method it is the Paraloid B-72 glue?

It's definitely a proof and definitely a DDO. Nice find! @Silviosi please take your time before commenting.

@Silviosi to start, you were wrong about this not being a proof, which is pretty basic.

Doug I have nothing to say about acetone for PVC or some polymers on Ag and Au, Shorth bath will remove and proper wash will be OK. For this coin with dust as was mention it is another thing. I give a method we use in artifacts restoration. Could be accomplish at home? Is big question.
The BadThad Verdi's formula was not bad, but from my perspective the version 2 must come. If want I can give my thinking on without interest. I never have more then one bottle so I was not able to analyze the solute. Works if you follows the after work restoration guides.

This just needs a soak in sudsy ammonia . That will easily remove the milky look . Nice DDO Proof .

I can send you a table of the artifacts restoration ways for silver. some are easy, some are hard to achieve. Important it is not to be aggressive on artifact.

Tjames88, Always best to remove coins from holders before taking photos when ever possible. In this case you can remove the coins very easy and with coins in 2x2 staple type cardboard holders as well. John1
