2008 Hawaii Quarter With Lettering Shadows

drowsyturtle New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 08/04/2023 3:24 pm Hi, I found this 2008 Hawaii quarter with (for lack of a better term) what looks like shadows coming off the HAWAII on the reverse and some coming off the States and America on the obverse. It only shows up in the pics if I shine the light in a certain direction. Anyone know what's up with this coin? Thanks. Report this Post to the Staff

In this case, it seems to reflect the breakdown in some sort of surface coating. Other starbursts represent Die Deterioration. Error coin writer and researcher. Report this Post to the Staff

drowsyturtle New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 08/05/2023 2:43 pm Thank you for identifying this. I am a newbie and learned quite a bit from researching this starburst effect. I found this article: https://www.numismaticnews.net/arch...nes-dramatic which shows a similar 2008 Alaska coin. Based on this article I guess this coin could be characterized as having "Dramatic Late Mid Die State flow lines with a mystery material that was squeezed through the flow lines (when it was forced to as the pressure was lesser there than on the smooth fields)." Would this effect diminish as the coin becomes more circulated? I took a few zoomed in photos which show the flow lines better. I don't suppose this have any value other than face?
