It's an excellent strike, very obviously cleaned -- although professionally. At least in my view. Very common date, but good punches like this are less common.
I'm not sure if all the SS Republic coins ended up in NGC slabs or not, but this coin sure looks like it has been through that kind of reconditioning. Anyway it's pretty. Whether it's a deal or not depends on what you paid.

I've got 30 days to consider it. Disappointed somewhat though, based on the original pictures. Only thing that makes me consider is the strength of the strike. I looked at a lot of 1858-Os before pulling the trigger on this one, and this was hands down one of the best strikes I saw. Details coin though, which I couldn't see from the original pictures, which probably means it'll go back. Just came today, so I'm still mulling.

For what it's worth, I don't think those scratches are deep enough to detail the coin, though it may knock it down a notch. It would be a coin toss whether the cleaning gets a pass, though. It might. Truth be told, this is best suited as as an album coin anyway. A nice one, by the way. No need to apologize for it. Seated Liberty halves are innately fantastic coins, if you ask me, as long as they are holed or otherwise degraded. I'd only send it back if you overpaid. If you got it below $250 there's no harm done and you can aways sell it on.

I'm in at $215, but it'll probably go back. I've got time to consider, but this isn't the coin I thought I was buying.

After some hard thought, I decided to send it back and keep my powder dry for something else. Coin may well be worth the price, but I don't like the idea of somebody putting pictures out that don't accurately represent the coin being sold. Ticks me off and that made my mind up in the final analysis. Darned shame - if the coin had looked like the picture I'd have been a happy guy.

I take it you are not interested in the coin at auction on GC?

I like it, but I'd rather go for a 45 at least. Really prefer AU (if I could afford it). That said, thanks for pointing me at that one. Bid is pretty low right now, but almost 4 days to go. I may just keep an eye on it.

Are you looking specifically for this date, or any nice seated liberty half example? I have several nice easy date pieces coming up for auction soon, like this, all of them XF, that won't cost a lot.

Frankly, I'm interested in Civil War years or just before. I hated selling off my collection of them years ago. Had a '63 proof that was a beauty. Bought it raw at a show for $700. All gone now.
