Hello all. I'm trying to learn a bit more about coins and ibran across a dime last night that I cant figure out. The obverse is somewhat blank, with a few details being visible and the reverse looks OK. I did find some examples of blank planchets but this isn't completely blank so I'm not sure what caused it. If someone could point me I'm the right direction, I would be grateful :)

*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

Somebody took a grinder to it. Or possibly a Dryer Coin. It didn't happen at the mint. PMD, sorry.

Yes, post-strike damage--possibly intentional.

Why would someone do that? To try and replicate a damaged coin or are they just sander crazy?

It's not possible to know why people do the things they do.

There are nearly countless ways to use everyday objects and processes to damage coins. The reasons for doing so belong solely to the makers off the nearly countless numbers of examples that exist.

I always think some folks are simply bored with time on their hands to experiment on coins.
