I don't normally buy "detail" coins. This one looks cleaned. Sellers photos. What do y'all think?

tough with such small photos but what appears to be swiping lines on the obv it looks like they cross over the devices. I think it was cleaned. pass on this one.

Tough date. I'll say EF details (cleaned). Not a fan.

Well, I've already purchased but can return it. It's a tough date and if it doesn't look to bad I will put it in my book. I hope it looks good in hand. Fingers crossed.

It came in today. I'm on the fence about keeping it. It pretty obviously cleaned but this is a very difficult coin to find. I don't love the fact that it's cleaned obviously, but finding another one in the sweet spot of affordability and availability is the problem.

VF35 details, old cleaning, starting to retone on the obverse.

A keeper until a better example makes its way home.

Solid XF detail but the cleaning is fairly obvious and eye appeal suffers accordingly.

Still a scarce coin with some value. PCGS shows a retail value of $600 in XF-40. It should be priced well below that figure.

new photos...

i see this one on the high end of VF35 lower XF. the reverse is closer to XF and the obv is close

the questions you need to ask:

how bad do you need this date?
can you wait for a better example?
would you be happy with details coin in the collection?
and finally is the coin closer to VF35 than XF40 and the price you paid equivalent to the grade less the designation?

i can say that the eye appeal of the overall coin is pretty good and the cleaning is not harsh. if I was looking at it and really wanted this date I would consider it. the value of the coin at retail for a straight coin would be between $500-600. on a details coin anywhere between 20%-70% less depending on the issue. I would think this one would be on the lower end of that discount. ebay shows a recent sale of an XF40 PCGS details Genuine sold for $445. its the only example I could find that comes close to this one. if I could get this in the $400 range I may might it

tough call my friend. let us know

I shouldn't be surprised when the seller's pictures are so different from the coin in hand. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Deceptive seller pics and the dissatisfaction of that aside, if you like the coin for the dollars paid, keep it, else send it back.

These dealer pictures look similar to the ones I saw when I bought the 1858-O half and had to sent it back. Very similar scenario. Go back and look at the dealer's pictures for the '58-O in that thread from a few days ago - very similar.
