this coin looks to have heat or fire damage. The coin must have been exposed to a temperature around 2200°f where the outer cupronickel clad layers softened and pulled away from the copper core. Both the obverse and reverse clad layers then developed a bubble that deformed the surfaces. When the coin cooled, this was the damage left behind. This would also account for the rough, pitted surfaces and the dark carbon spotting.
