I can see that VAM is important to Morgan and Peace dollars. I also see sites dedicated to Seated Liberty die marriages. Aside from numismatic curiosity, is there any reason to consider die marriages for that denomination?

It can be a useful tool to confirm authenticity. Or you can become a Seated dollar variety collector.

Depends on your collecting goals.

If you want a single example for a type set then die marriages do not really matter. If you are looking to expand into the Seated dollar series then they absolutely matter.

I've yet to encounter a collector who's wedded to Seated dollar die marriages.

The VAM guys have some cool names attached to their interests, like "hot lips" and "spitting eagle." Has anyone yet named a Seated dollar variety?

There's the "in between" category: a date set.
Die marriages do not matter as much there.
Common varieties would suffice.

Then there's the "in between" category: a full date/mintmark set.
Then die marriages should be considered.
You'd be spending a LOT of money on completing the set so you might prefer the common die marriages.

And take into consideration grade?

I suppose "relevant" could also be considered from a TPG standpoint. I see NGC doesn't have any varieties broken out in their price guide anywhere in the whole series, and only 5 listed in their Variety Plus. PCGS has 4 dates showing varieties broken out - an RPD and three MPDs. Contrast that with all the Top 100 VAM stuff with Morgans, and Liberty Seated dollars don't seem to have the same interest from those TPGs. Not sure what ANACS does.

Well, just for kicks, I attempted an analysis of the markers on my coin to see if they were identifiable. I think I might have the OC-4, which is obverse 3, reverse B.

http://seateddollarvarieties.com/1872-OC4.shtml

Obverse 3 seems best identified by the die line under the foot of Liberty. Reverse B is pretty straightforward, with a big lump next to the T and also two die chips on the lower left foot of T (not mentioned in the guide, but clearly visible, and not appearing on reverse A,C,D).

I am less confident on the line from the 1 to the shield. Honestly, the way some of the identification lines are drawn seems really arbitrary, with considerable manual error.

Apparently the OC-4 has 775 estimated survivors and is R2, which I guess is nothing special.
