I have a very normal looking 1953 no mint mark penny with no size or color or texture change that explains its weight of 3.38 grams

If the scale is accurate, then the coin was struck on a slightly thick planchet.

Looks like you might need a new scale to start with,that one looks well used. A good scale that reads down to 0.001 grams with a max of 20 grams does not cost much. Double and triple check your current scale. Rolled thick planchet sounds plausible.

3.24 grams was in tolerance so this one was a touch heavy if the scale is accurate. The previous posts explain why.

That is one tiny scale! Good thing you weren't weighing an American Silver Eagle. You wouldn't be able to see the readout.
