See the attached image. A weight of 25.96 grams is given. Just don't see how that surface corrosion can turn an "8" to a "7" on this piece. Opinions? Not in GNL. John Lorenzo, Numismatist, United States. Edited by colonialjohn 08/10/2023 1:41 pm

Ignore the coloration of the first photo due to a low KB upload due to site CCF size restrictions. Your opinion of the "7". A second image has been added which is more representative of the specimen in question.

Why would they have retooled the 8 to a 7? Very strange.

BTW - Even if 1808 it does not plate match any 1808 Mo/FM in his GNL CCC8R encyclopedia of Portrait counterfeits. GNL#1808-O:N/R: Mo FM-004 on page 398 is close but not a match. It seems I may have to give it its own GNL# at this point - so asking opinions before its officially a new variety. Posted in my new Facebook CCC site recently.

@col, can you please post a nice closeup of just the date? I'd like to see if there is evidence of tooling or if that is just a weird hit that flattened the number 8 in a way that it emphasized the portion of that digit that looks like a number 7. Thx.

ColonialJohn, what is the GNL work that you reference? My literature on Spanish colonials is sorely thin.

Date looks to be as made... and not at all a die match to this piece that came out of Spain: I assume most of these wildly dated pieces - either way early or way late - to be later 1800s products. They seem to "mostly" show rather correct details, comparatively, and often seem to have Asian connections.

Quote: They seem to "mostly" show rather correct details, comparatively, and often seem to have Asian connections. And I realize the one above does not really fit that theme, as the detail is pretty much first-glance "off"... I don't know, maybe it's just the similarity (coincidence?) in date numbers used, but the "1708" piece John posted has me thinking somewhat specifically about the pieces below... The "0781" from Bob and John's book... the "1870" for which multiple examples exist - and I recall at least one, possibly two, coming out of the Philippines... and the "1878" w/a few chops.

I'll grab a close-up of the date tomorrow. Under a 10x loupe, I don't see obvious signs of tooling.

Based on this evidence will give it its own GNL# soon. JPL
