I found this Nickel in an old jar of change. It weighs 5.35g and appears to have been damaged. However the metal seems to all be the same metal throughout the coin.

There is a lot of surface damage. Is there any possibility this is a mint error? Or could anyone provide me with an idea as to how it for this way? Thanks.

Your coin was damaged someway after it left the mint. Appears that lots of heat was involved.

Your initial thought was correct. It looks like someone struck an arc (welding) on this nickel. For sure it didn't leave the mint looking like this.

It looks like a piece of melted solder on it.
