Am travelling to the UK for 6 weeks in 3 weeks time. Will start in London and work my way up until the Orkney Isles. Am definitely going to be buttering up any bar tenders etc for coins from the till but also thought I would try some trades with fellow collectors. Am chasing circulating coins that are not included in the yearly BU sets so plenty of 50p coins and the 10p Alphabet coins (of which I have none). I have multiple sets of the 3 Oz alphabet series as well as spares of most of the coloured $2 coins. If you have some spare coins and would like some Oz coins, let me know. You can see what UK coins I have if you are a Numista user and search for EKrabappel. Cheers

If you are looking for as many different circulating types as you can find, do as much transacting as possible with cash, and retain anything that may be interesting.

When you go to a money changer, bank, ask them nicely to search through the till for anything that catches their eye. Just avoid wasting too much of their time, and be happy with what you get.

That is how I have been collecting Australian circulating coinage by as many different types that are possible to find.
All at face value.
Just for fun.
Just as a kid would do.

While you are in the UK, ask your friends and relos to do the same.

Take a few interesting 'spares' with you, just for giveaways to any kid (or grown up kid), that may be interested. Coloured $1 and $2 coins OK, as well as commemorative 50 and 20 Cents coins.

Post what you find when you get back to Oz

I would be interested in knowing what you find since I have not found much of anything interesting since Covid started.

You can also ask at a Royal Mail post office branch for 50 pence coins like:

2022 QE II Memorial with King Charles on it - date is small on the reverse
2023 King Charles Coronation

You might be able to find the QE II Platinum Jubilee 50 pence coin as well.

Coins like 2020 Royal Shield 50 pence, I have yet to see despite over 46 million of them were made for circulation.

Enjoy your time in the UK.

Most banks will probably let you have a couple of £10 bags of 50p's or £5 bags of 10p's if you are changing money, You can always say you need the change for slot machines. If you end up with a lot of coins you don't want, some supermarkets (notably Sainsbury's and Asda) have self-service tills that take all denominations of UK coinage.

If you are going to any seaside resort, you are sure to find amusement arcades with 'pusher' machines that take 2p and 10p coins. Most of the Alphabet 10p's that I've found came from these. Even if you don't like gambling, the arcades are great for changing money as you can easily exchange £5 or £10 for 10p coins without anyone wondering why you need the coins!

Please feel free to send me a PM when you are in the UK.

When passing the Midlands you are welcome to have a rummage through my spares tin - I have spares of most apart from Kew Gardens.

Thanks for all the responses.
Ken - Will send a message later. Good tip about the post offices.
Numisrob - I didn't think UK banks would change money unless you had an account? Good to know about the self-serve at Sainsbury's etc. I was thinking of getting bulk coins from the arcades (will be at Blackpool for a day) but was worried I'd be stuck with half a ton of 10p coins I couldn't get rid of. I noticed 1 arcade had a machine that took 5 or 10 quid notes and dispensed 10p coins. Will PM you once I'm in the UK.
AndyG - Which part of the midlands do you hail from? Will be staying at Tarrington, then Derbyshire, then Croston and Atwick.
