My father-in-law showed me this Lincoln Memorial penny. He asked if I could help him figure out what type of error this is. At first I thought someone just messed with the coin to make it look like this. When I was surfing around trying to find something like this. The best I could come up with is "incomplete plating,". just looking for assistance in identifying what happened to this coin.

PMD. It's been damaged after it left the U.S Mint.

looks like damage, but how could the rime and motto on the obverse be completely missing, but the rim is present on the reverse.
Need better images, full coin image (in one picture) of both sides and an accurate weight will be a great start.
more importantly an edge on image will tell what happened here.

For now, I'll say that somebody started removing material around the circumference of the obverse of this cent.

There is no way that a coin can get damaged like that while it is being struck. It must have been damaged after it left the mint. Either deliberately (someone applying a dremel or some such) or accidentally (the coin got caught in machinery of some kind). I'd tend to lean towards "deliberate", since accidental machine damage tends to be more random than this.

Yes sorry but that's damage rather than mint error.

to the CCF

That is not a mint error but as already said damage that occurred after release into circulation.

Thank you for your input. Due to the fact that the circumference around the coin being the same as a coin roller ring damage. Pretty sure that is where it occurred.
I appreciate all the assistance.

I highly doubt that a coin rolling machine caused this kind of damage..
a rolling machine has little claws set in 3 or 4 locations that curl up under the paper to roll in in, there fore a continous scrape is just not feasible.

Yes no way it's from a crimper. The first 2 pics are strange. It looks like the obverse rim is scraped out to about the size of a quarter, and the reverse isn't affected. Or is that circle part of the holder?
