I've had this coin for some time, but I never really looked at it in any detail. I purchased it as a Centered Broad Strike, but after I took these pictures I have a question for the CCF members.

I think this may be a close overlap double strike. The coin shows a well developed rim on both obverse and reverse on about 60% of the circumference. The only way it could have been formed would be if it was struck first in the collar and then struck a second time outside of the collar. The second strike stretched the rim as the metal was forced to the outside of the coin, as it flattened the rest of the rim.

What do you think? It is plausible or am I missing something?

I'm not 100% confident in my detail knowledge of the minting process to offer a truly expert opinion, so take the following input with a bit of suspicion:

The full rim is not formed by the collar but rather prior to the strike when the planchet travels through the upsetting mill. I've read it is called a proto-rim at this point, implying perhaps its not yet fully formed.

I suspect what we are seeing 0n your coin are the remnants of that proto-rim which leads to a conclusion it was not double struck but rather a centered broad struck coin as advertised.

Thanks for the replies! The reason I thought it could be an actual rim, and not the proto-rim, is that other broad struck coins don't seem to have the same, well defined rim shape. I pulled out another 1999-P Jefferson nickel that was struck outside of the collar and took a few pictures.
