Much of the obverse is sheared off and still peeling, with some metal hanging on by a thread at rim. I got this for about $1.20 out of bulk War Nickel bucket at LCS.

Great lamination!

It's interesting how deep into the planchet that the design is still recognizable!

I appreciate the interest. The reverse has some pretty obvious striations where the poor alloy mix is separating, but nothing peeling (yet).

As to the design still being recognizable though so much metal is gone — I find this absolutely baffling. I had no idea that designs affected a coin so deeply into the surface. It makes me wonder if there is a point somewhere in the center of this coin, if further metal was lost to peeling, that the Monticello and Jefferson would both be discernible on a single plane.
