@twi, first welcome to CCF. Second, the smoothed edge is indicative of mechanical damage, such as being a Dryer Coin as noted by @err. If this coin was missing a clad layer, then one of the faces would be copper colored.

I always get Dryer Coin and acidic mixed up, so the rim is a clue. Larger rim is Dryer Coin and with clad coins the copper is eaten away in the middle when in contact with acid solution of some sort. Works for me anyway.
