I'm thinking this is a small date, as far as I can see? It also has a very distinctive, high pitched ring when ( very carefully) dropped from a few inches. It sounds exactly like dropping a 1976 cent, and nothing like a 2002. I don't have a scale yet, so don't have a way to verify the actual weight. It's definitely in pretty rough shape so most likely something I'm just going to hang on to for my own collection. I want to double check that I've identified it correctly, at least so far as can be verified by photos alone. To my knowledge, these are the somewhat rare-ish variety, if I understand correctly? The 1982 D copper would be the truly rare and valuable coin if I'm not mixing things up? I never thought I'd enjoy looking at pennies with a magnifying glass so much, haha. *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

Yes SD copper, I have a few examples myself. The SD-Denver is the elusive one.

A scale and an actual microscope that can be hooked up to my PC are very high on my list of things to purchase

You're correct on it being a Small Date.
Errers and Varietys.

yep, a nice small date cent. I think a scale should be your first priority for a purchase, then the scope.. (just my opinion.)

Definitely going to be getting a scale soon. I actually found several more of these going through my old penny rolls, some of which were actually in decent condition

Quote: not sure what to do with it now? Keep it if you're looking to collect all 7 types that are readily found, or spend it. The 1982 (P) small date bronze is not rare or valuable (unless you get into MS67 range). None of them are, except the 1982-D small date bronze. Only two of those have ever been found.
