This is my latest acquisition, a Fuzion model PL-50 pocket scale. Load range 50g to 0.001 (accurancy +/- 0.003g). Included: Soft fabric case, 50g calibration weight, plastic tweezers, small weighing pan, 2 AAA batteries, instruction booklet and warranty card. It has 6 modes for weighing : g/ oz/ gn/ ct/ dwt/ ozt. It powers up in gram mode. My only complaint thus far (note I've not used it in the field yet) is that the 50g weight can be hard to shove back into the elastic holder and that it's made in China.

After reading lots of reviews on different products I decided on this one at Amazon ($20). I'm hoping it will help with coin purchases at antique malls, local estate sales, maybe even a yard sale. For my future coin purchases the 50g max weight is not an issue.

As you see in the photos, it has a back-lit screen and a hood to cover the scale surface in case you're in a windy environment. That's an indication of how sensitive this scale is. It's also prone to errors if not on a level surface. Note that closing the hood will not allow weighing a coin in a 2x2. Won't fit.

Images (sorry, couldn't frame shots to include the decimal point):
No 1: showing name plate
No 2: Powered up, notice it's reading 0.080, not yet calibrated
No 3: After pressing the TARE button and weighing the 50g weight, reading 50.004g. Note that I have no method of verifying the actual weight of the 50g.
No 4: Test using a circulated 1922 Peace dollar in a 2x2, reading 27.833g. As I'm sure ya'll know, mint weight would be 26.73g. I can't find a reference to tell me the accuracy of a US Minted Peace dollar. Anyone know?
No 5: So how much does a 2x2 weigh? About 2.057g. Do the math, you know you want to: 27.833-2.057 = 25.776g
No 6: So if you need to measure a coin in a capsule, how much does a capsule weigh? About 7.795g (US Mint capsule)

I plan on storing a 2x2 and a capsule with the scale so I can get a better reading on site and in front of the seller.

Try taking the 50g weight to your pharmacy or post office and see if they will check it for you.

Nice scale and set, Mike! And AAA batteries easier to find and cheaper than some of the button batteries used in others. However, I would replace the ones supplied (probably "el cheapos") with ones less susceptible to leakage and corrosion.

@Hondo: Good advice. I replaced them with Duracells. Discovered one scale feature I don't think is listed in the booklet. Unit powered off after several minutes of no activity. Good feature because you can turn the unit on by pressing on one corner while still in the case and not realize it.

So how much does a 2x2 weigh?

Don't forget to include the weight of the staples too!

A 2x2 with 4 staples, 2.139g. However, I notice that removing the 2x2 and placing it back on the scale gives a slightly different reading. Seems to be off by more than the +/- 0.003g stated accuracy but not by much.

I would put little trust in the weight of a coin in a 2X2.
2X2s for different denominations have different weights. I just weighed two of mine (empty, Cowen's brand): $1, 1.90 g; 1¢ 3.33 g. Also, there will be variability between different brands for the same denomination.
Yes, my scale only measures to the nearest 0.01 g - accuracy to a milligram is superfluous given the tolerance variability inherent in mint-struck coins.

Granted because different denominations have different cutouts. I think we all get that. However, consider if you are considering a coin in a 2x2 and for whatever reason you can't free the coin. Isn't having SOME measured data to make an adjustment better than none? Or worse yet making a guess? I mean how much difference can there be that would throw the test completely out of the water?
