Just bought this coin today from a local antique store. This commemorative was authorized by Public Law 110-277 and signed by President George W. Bush on July 17,2008. Surcharges collected were to be used for funding for the construction of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial. The law authorized the minting of both uncirculated and proof silver dollar qualities only for the calendar year beginning January 1, 1010. No other sets (EX: 2-coin set) were produced. From Public Law 110-277: "The Congress finds as follows: (1) The Armed Forces of the United States have answered the call and served with distinction around the world—from hitting the beaches in World War II in the Pacific and Europe, to the cold and difficult terrain in Korea, the steamy jungles of Vietnam, and the desert sands of the Middle East. (2) All Americans should commemorate those who come home having survived the ordeal of war, and solemnly honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives for their country. (3) All Americans should honor the millions of living dis abled veterans who carry the scars of war every day, and who have made enormous personal sacrifices defending the principles of our democracy. (4) In 2000, Congress authorized the construction of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial. (5) The United States should pay tribute to the Nation's living disabled veterans by minting and issuing a commemora tive silver dollar coin. (6) The surcharge proceeds from the sale of a commemora tive coin would raise valuable funding for the construction of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial." Designers: Don Everhart (Obv) and Thomas Cleveland (Rev) Mintage: Uncirculated (78,301) and Proof (202,770). Total 281,071, far less that the 350,000 authorized. Commems shout out: http://goccf.com/t/431942What I see in the design of the obverse. Far right is an amputee who has been fitted with a prosthetic. Middle solder is on crutches, needed to walk. Far left solder is the one that breaks my heart. This soldier has no visible disability, perhaps PTSD, mental anguish or anger issues.

I like that one a lot. I have had some random sort of commems, this is one that would be cool to have. My dad got some money every month for being partially disabled. I never really understood it. I know there was either a bullet or some shrapnel they never did get removed in Korea, so not sure if it was due to that? I believe he did have some PTSD issues as well. For the time period he served, I'm not really sure it would have been officially diagnosed and received any sort of compensation. My mom just said to not bring up his service. He talked about a few things, but not much or often.

That is a very nice Commemorative coin - I just went and bought one for myself. Out of the three sets of boots shown I'm represented by the left set - for my Traumatic Brain Injury. (not all unseen disabilities are just emotional)

Dearborn, I truely hope you are doing well with your injury. I served one year in Vietnam with the Air Force. My job was to improve electronic systems at airfields and Radomes like outside of DaNang. I was never in any real danger. Not like you guys.

thanks Mike, and thank you for your service - no matter where you were or placed in danger or not, your job was also essential to the effort as well.

Well I went and bought one, and here it is: It has a little of the blue 'frocking on the capsule I tried dusting it off, but it just moved about.

Well I feel silly now - I already had one I bought long ago. I just went to file my images into its proper directory and found I had bought it already. Now I think I may give this to a vet next time I have an appointment at the VA Hospital next week.
