Will be visiting London and I have these coins and not sure if I can spend them or any that I should keep?

Thank you.

All the smaller denominations - 20p downwards - are still in circulation and so can be spent anywhere. The £1 coins you have are all old type and shops no longer will accept them in most cases. They can be paid in at Post Offices or Banks, though they may insist you are paying them into an account or purchasing some other service.

Banks appear to have stopped taking old £1's along with the old 5/10 and 50 pence coins.

Hi. They're right about the pound coins but I've got a feeling that if you give the bank a pile of 10 of them they'll change them for you. If they're in exceptionally good condition they might be worth holding on to. Not really worth enough to sell yet.

You can't use the old pounds anymore, however they're kind of fun and I'd encourage you to hang on to them for curiosity purposes instead of condemning them to the melting pot :)

Just to clarify on the £1 coins - they can still be paid into most banks. I checked with mine (Barclays in Exeter, Devon) yesterday.

That is not to say you might be better hanging on to them. At present the collecting market for them seems completely dead, but in a few years - who knows?

with PaddyB. I work as a tour guide and frequently change old £1 coins for new ones with my customers when they bring them back from previous visits to the UK and discover they can't spend them. My local branch of the HSBC Bank is still happy to change them. I tend to keep ones in EF or better condition (and scarcer ones like the capital cities coins of 2010-1) but I don't think there will ever be any collector demand for heavily circulated worn specimens, especially from the very high mintage years of 1983-5, plenty of which were put aside in Uncirculated condition at the time of issue.
