I was reading about planchet errors at error-ref.com and I read about this one called a Rockwell test mark in planchet. I'm wondering if that's what's going on with this penny. The article described them as pellet-shaped, whereas this one is triangular so it might be something else. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Given the images posted, it appears to be a matter of post-strike damage.

@sick, just in case you are interested to learn a little bit more about hardness testing, the below graphic comes from the website of one of the manufacturers of this equipment. While different hardness tests may use different shape indenters, I believe that these all would look like a round impression in the surface of the metal. The difference in diameters of the impression made by a low penetrating force and a high one is quantified and translated into a hardness value.

Looks like someone named Rockwell was testing their hammer and nail.
Thanks for that informative graphic Spence.

sickpuppy78501, Please use the search box here on CCF. We get the "rockwell" question more than a few times every year. Tons of useful info using the search box. John1

While I'm here I'll ask before I go look it up on CCF search bar.
Do they check a coin on a certain side and location? Copper and Clads?

From the error-ref website: Quote: All alleged Rockwell test marks in planchets are now considered suspect, including the 1971-S cent described above. My personal assumption is that every single one of these is just damage. Honestly, I'd look elsewhere for mint errors rather than this rabbit hole.
