I found a silver colored penny and discovered it sticks to a magnet. How can I determine if this is indeed a steel penny? I have read some close topics on this dayed coin but they all say 1995 D. The one I posses has no mint mark. So what steps can I take to get the coin validated [or not] and valuated? Any help would be appreciated.

Looking at the photos the coloring is not really representative of the finish on this coin. It is shiney like almost proof grade shine. I have not cleaned it. I did weigh it because I see it is a question that comes up often, that said this coin weighs 2.62 grams. The photo shows some rainbow affect that does not show in normal light. I don't have a way to measure it.

Coin Frog is coating it enough for a magnet to pick it up?

Weight is perfectly normal for a plated cent. Steel plating will stick to a magnet.

Is this done at the mint or after? Why would someone even take the time? So it seems you are all saying it is fugazie. Wirth only a penny?

Aye, plated--not accomplished by the mint. Yes, worth one cent--could be rolled up with other cents and deposited or exchanged at a bank.

Plating cents is a common chemistry experiment for middle school and high school students.

You may see even gold plated coins which were popular as well. All plated coins have no real value in Numismatic. Just a cool find.
