Can't tell from the image, but looks like it could be a partial collar. The Cent wasn't fulling inside of the collar when struck thus not making the cent round in the area above the collar. I have a dine like that. The reeding is only on part of the edge of the coin.

For smartelf, A "railroad rim" & a "partial collar" are interchangable, they mean the same thing.

OK, I just uploaded the pics from camera(the first were from a cell-phone) here is a link http://img26.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=p4040844.jpg
It is actually a 58-D, also I found a 55 coin also with something on the rim, but a lot less dramatic. side vie is for the 58.

It looks like an Encased Coin to me with no value at all but wait for others to respond on there opinions. Those were the years they were doing alot of this putting cents in encasements for advertisement reasons

I couldn't tell with the first photos but the recent photos confirmed it for me. I now agree with jazz. I think this is a previously Encased Coin that was broken out of the encasement leaving the damage from being forced into the encasement around the edge. I think probably the first posts said looks like because they weren't positive with the first set of blurry photos either.

A railroad rim looks alot like a railroad train wheel, it has a pronounced "step", while your coins rim was depressed in the middle. Good lesson for beginner's here, there are alot of strange Cents circulating today. ~ Jim

The 1958-D Cent is from a Good Luck holder. Now worth melt as the coin is damaged. Coins like this are better left in the holder as they do hold some collectable value.

Hi,
The coin at the top of the post was removed from an encasement, as suggested by some.

I didn't check the 1955. It's easier if you post the pics here rather than link to them. Too many popups, as they are called where you posted the pics.

Have Fun,
Bill
