A friend in the estate sale business gave me this coin yesterday. It's from a collection he got on consignment many years ago that he recently found while cleaning up his office. I bought coins from this collection when he got it that were genuine. Unfortunately I don't know anything about these. It weighs 23.7 grams and is approximately 38mm. In a hurry this morning but here's a couple quick photos. I can post better ones if it's not an obvious fake.

Can't say if real or fake, but as with many shipwrecks there was some controversy surrounding salvage operations:: https://shiplib.org/index.php/shipw...villas-1656/

I don't know how you prove it's a ship wreck coin certainly a hand written note is not proof it came of any ship wreck just my opinion.

Obviously there's no way to prove this is a shipwreck coin. I probably shouldn't have included the handwritten description to avoid confusion. I'm asking if the coin itself is fake. Here's a couple slightly better pictures. (edited to hopefully correct the orientation of the pictures)

Well, FWIW, the coin was cast from a salvage piece, and a very decent chance it was of a Maravillas piece. Most salvaged Potosi 8R of these years are from the Capitana and Maravillas wrecks.

Note, however, the flip insert says Mexico whereas this is a repro of Bolivia... though ppl are sloppy with that commonly.

Aside from the highlighted portion, the filled in crack, some prominent casting zits... and to the trained eye, the overall "mushy" look to the surfaces beyond what seawear does.

Not a repro I've seen before, which is curious since it's apparently older.

Obviously without a photocert, it is sort of just a coin with a piece of paper. However, if you know what types of coins were usually found on certain wrecks... and additionally, what they typically look like after "conservation" (though different batches of coins from the same wreck may have been cleaned differently or just show vastly different levels of preservation in general)... it lends some assurance.

I couldn't get a good picture but there was a section of the edge that had parts of a line that may have been a seam that wasn't ground off. I didn't even see the "C". Checking with my estate sale friend he thought the collection was assembled in the 60's through 80's.
