Hello,
can somebody help to understand if one of the below coins may be in silver or nickel ?

Coins are Portugal 100 Escudos (km# 642/642a), the 16.70 g. is quite sure a nickel (km# 642) coin, since I got it from a Portuguese coin dealer, while the 16.48 I don't know, since I got it in a lot of commemorative coins.

In Kruase there is not the weight for the nickel coin, but there is the weight for the silver, and it is 16.5 g.

Anyway, if somebody can help, thanks a lot.

That coin is 75% Copper 25% Nickel , it´s one of the 100 escudos and 200 escudos collection from the Portuguese discovery´s (This one is in memory of Bartolomeu Dias) , there were 1.000.000 minted and it´s worth around 2 euros.I have a few of that collection to swap if anybody is interested.

Hmm, but are they both Cu-Ni coins? Unfortunately my catalog (Schön) does not list the weights of the different versions either. And it seems that only the gold and platinum versions have special marks, but not the silver version ...

I would have thought the Silver one would be heavier? Not sure why copper-nickel would weigh 16.7g unless it is thicker? Are they the same thickness?

thanks a lot for your support, about thickness, I didn't check it, anyway I'll do it next week-end.

A question to QuickSilver, I see you are from UK, can you suggest interesting place to visit about coins shop or market in London ? Since I'll be there for few days the week after easter.

Hi Rosso,

I very rarely go down to London so I really don't know good places to visit for coin shops. Very sorry. It might be worth putting a post in the UK coins section. Most of the other Brits will spot your post there and may be able to help.

I can, however, recommend a visit to the British Museum while you are in London. They have some very good displays of world coins since coins were invented to the present day.
