In my bankroll of Washington quarters this week I saw what I thought was a good-looking 1996 P Quarter, perhaps a Mint Slate example. However on a closer look thru my microscope I could see miner Knicks in the fields and wear on the high points! But the Eagle had good feathers so I looked at George on the Obverse again. I found a Die Crack running from the rim under the R in Liberty to the top of Georges head disappearing into the hair! Wow a spike head Quarter and in searching around George I found another small Die Crack running from the Rim to the front of the base under the top of the 1 0f the Date. When I went back to the Reverse I found another light Die Crack running under the R of Quarter from the end of the Laurel to the rim. This coin just keeps on giving! Anyway look at the pics and let me know your thoughts and regards all.

Nice Spike Head! You might have a Rim To Rim Die Crack, on the bust area.

This it is not a head spike. Some coins show die cracks on both sides. Basically the Hammer and Avil work at at 1 to 3 (one Anvil and three Hammers) Sometimes we find 1/2 to 1/2.

Nothing special then both sides has Dies cracks, No Spike no rim to rim.

So Silvio, you're saying it's not what it's all cracked up to be?

Nice Error, I'm sure Alfalfa would be honored to be compared to an error coin.

Silviosi Found this reference listed as a Spikehead SKH-25c-1996P-03 on Cuds-On-Coins. Very close to mine! Regards!

Congrats on the new spike head. Both of those dies were ready for the scrap bin.

Silviosi, you have a lot of knowledge that you share but I don't understand why you say this isn't a 25c spike head.

Silviosi, I don't catch your meaning. Allcoinsaregood does have a new 25c spike head as defined on Cud-on-coins.

http://cuds-on-coins.com/spike-head/
From Cud-on-coins:
'U.S. Coins with "SPIKE HEAD"
All "SPIKE HEADS" will have a die crack from the rim into any portion of the bust. It shall be limited to die cracks found on the obverse of the coin. The designation SKH will identify this type of die crack...'

Quote:
...Nothing special then both sides has Dies cracks, No Spike no rim to rim.

A spike head can have other die cracks and the designation isn't negated if it has other die cracks, even on the reverse.

A spike head doesn't have to be rim to rim, but it must be from the rim to some part of the bust on the obverse.
